UNO SCUDO MAGNETICO SUPERCONDUTTIVO PER ASTRONAUTI
Oggi, 17 giugno, si svolge a Parigi il workshop “Superconducting Magnet Technology for Space” ospitato dal CEA (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives) nell’ambito del progetto EU-FP7 Space Radiation Superconducting Shield (SR2S) coordinato dall’INFN.
Il progetto SR2S, iniziato nel 2013 e che si concluderà nel dicembre 2015, studia come sviluppare tecnologie per proteggere gli astronauti dalle radiazioni provenienti dal sole e dai raggi cosmici, nel corso di missioni di esplorazione planetaria nello spazio profondo. Il progetto studia le tecnologie necessarie per lo sviluppo di un sistema di schermatura attiva basata su magneti superconduttori, un vero e proprio "scudo magnetico" che sfrutta la superconduttività per eliminare il consumo di energia e ridurre al minimo il peso della struttura magnetica.
Sono state studiate varie configurazioni tra cui l’innovativa configurazione a “pumpkin” (zucca) che consente di ottenere uno schermatura efficace riducendo al massimo il materiale attraversato dalle particelle incidenti, evitando così la generazione di particelle secondarie.
SR2S è coordinato dal prof. Roberto Battiston dell’ASI e, oltre all’ INFN (Genova, Perugia, Bologna, Milano, Roma, Trento), vede la partecipazione di due importanti imprese del settore spaziale, Thales Alenia Space e OHB-CGS, insieme a CERN, CEA e Columbus Superconducting.
